Back to School Checklist Beaufort, SC

It’s that time of year again! While some of you may be eagerly counting down the days until back to school, others may be feeling overwhelmed by the looming return date in mind. With three kids in school here in Beaufort and my experience as a former teacher, I know how hectic the end of summer can feel. Make returning to the classroom a fun and easy transition this fall, and see my go-to checklist for back to school prep!

1.Plan ahead

  •  I highly recommend slowly adjusting sleep schedules to prepare for the first day of school. About a week or two before school begins, we start going to bed and waking up a little earlier. This way, the first day back isn’t a complete shock!

  • We also create a family calendar. Write down everyone’s important dates and times and display it somewhere everyone will see it regularly (the fridge is always a great spot). Check out Lulu Burgess or Cabana 22 for a fun selection of stationary and calendars.

  • Designate study spaces and school stuff “drop spots.” A little organization goes a long way in easing the transition back to school and the stress that comes with it for both kids and parents! Pick a bench, cubby, or other space in the house where all school stuff will live and be easy to find first thing in the morning!

2. Take advantage of Tax Free Weekend in SC

  • When: Aug. 5 at 12:01 a.m. –Aug. 7 at midnight

  • What’s Tax Free: Clothing, accessories, footwear, school supplies, computers, software, printers and bed & bath supplies

  • Important Information: The South Carolina Tax-Free Weekend is unique in that it has no dollar limits on eligible purchases. Unlike may other states, SC has a “bed and bath” category which includes bath mats, bedding, towels, shower curtains, mattress pads, blankets and more.

3. Wardrobe Check

  • Make sure your child is set with everything required by the school dress code. See the latest Beaufort County Schools Uniform Guidelines for more information. If your little needs new personalized spirit wear or gear, I recommend New South T-Shirts (school year gear/uniforms.  For those of you looking to sport Beaufort High “eagle green” check out The Tabby Shore downtown!

4. Personalize

  • If your kiddos are constantly losing their gear or coming home with someone else’s lunch box, I highly recommend the monogramming services at Lowcountry Stitch,

5. Pack it up

  • Is it time for a new  backpack or lunchbox this year? If you’re looking for something that will last the toll of the school year and your kiddo will love, this is yet another reason to stop by Lowcountry Stitch

6. Find the best resources

  • Set your child up with some great apps for support throughout the school year. I love this list from Very Well Family:

Best Overall: Khan Academy.

Best for Toddlers: Busy Shapes.

Best for Preschoolers: ABCmouse.com.

Best for Elementary School Kids: Prodigy.

Best for Tweens: Google Arts and Culture.

Best for Teens: Quizlet.

Best for Teaching Kids Coding: Hopscotch.

7. Check the Calendar

8. Support your teacher

  • Write a letter to your teacher and tell them how much you are looking forward to the year ahead.

  • Planning on gifting in the future? Add a “worksheet” on the back asking them to fill out their favorites. Think– colors, monogram, restaurants, shops, and scents.

  • Figure out ways to be involved in the classroom this school year.

  • Touch base with teachers early on to troubleshoot any issues your kids may be having.

  • Find great teacher discounts at Serendipity, Tabby Shore, and Sugar Belle.

9. Support your community:

  • Stuff the Bus with United Way of Beaufort : An annual effort by Beaufort County Schools to collect and distribute school supplies that will enable children with limited resources to work on a level playing field with other students.  Look for the yellow school bus on a Saturday in August 2022 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm in the parking lot of the Washington Walmart. Click Here for a list of suggested supplies typically needed throughout the school year.

10. Celebrate!

  • Ease the back to school jitters and CELEBRATE the New (school) Year.. It doesn’t have to be over the top. Let the kids choose

    • Go supply shopping. Start downtown and shop local before heading to a store like Walmart or Target for the rest of your supplies.

    • Bake a cake together with supplies from Cook on Bay.

    • Eat out at their favorite restaurant. We love bringing the kids to Fat Patties or Fish Camp on 11th Street in Port Royal.
